How to Fix a Chipped Tooth with Cosmetic Dentistry

Ever wondered how to fix a chipped tooth? This article is for you!

Chipping a tooth can happen to anyone at any time. It’s just one of those unfortunate and unlucky things. You may chip your tooth in a sporting incident or simply by biting down on something hard. Sometimes the strong enamel that covers our teeth isn’t enough. If you have chipped there is no need to worry.

Thanks to modern cosmetic dentistry, fixing a chipped tooth is easier than it ever has been before. Cosmetic dentistry treatments such as veneers, crowns and cosmetic bonding can help restore your smile back to its former glory.

At Boon Dental we care about your smile; our dentists have a lot of experience in fixing chipped or broken teeth. We offer cosmetic treatments at both our Wentworth Point and Ropes Crossing practices. In this article, we will discuss how to fix a chipped tooth.

What to do After You Chip Your Tooth

If you realise you have chipped a tooth, it’s important to remain calm. The first thing to do is call your dentist to make an appointment. While you wait for this appointment you should:

  • Avoid eating hard foods such as nuts and lollies
  • Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth with the chipped tooth
  • Take some over the counter painkillers if required
  • Avoid food and drink which may cause sensitivity like ice cream
  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to help keep the area clean
  • If the tooth edge is sharp you may wish to place a little cotton wool or gum over it for protection

How to Fix a Chipped Tooth

As each patient and case of a chipped tooth is different, it’s important to have a dental consultation to determine the best treatment option for you. Below are a few examples of methods our dentists may suggest to fix a chipped tooth:

Dental Bonding

If you have chipped off a small piece of enamel from the front of your tooth, then your dentist may recommend bonding. Bonding uses tooth colour resin to cover any imperfections. Bonding usually does not require numbing of the teeth.

Your dentist will start by matching the resin to your natural tooth colour. From there the surface of your tooth will be etched slightly to roughen it. This makes it easier for the resin to adhere to. Once your dentist has applied the resin they will then shape it and set it with light.

Bonding is a relatively quick and simple procedure. It’s a great way to fix a chipped tooth that can have you smiling again in no time!

Dental Crown

If you have broken off a large chunk of your tooth, then a dental crown may be the best option. Dental crowns are a common cosmetic dental procedure our dentists often use to fix a chipped tooth. They look just like your natural teeth, so blend in seamlessly and can last for years.

Your dentist will probably require x-rays of your teeth to assess the damage and review the nearby teeth. They will prepare your damaged tooth to make room for the crown to be placed on top. Your crown is custom-made by a dental lab technician and matched to your natural teeth. They are usually made from porcelain.

A dental crown is a strong fixture that is long-lasting. It is a slightly more involved procedure than dental bonding. Your dentist will be able to talk you through the process and advise you on any aftercare needed.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a great way to completely transform your smile. With veneers, you can achieve symmetry and sparkle.

Dental veneers are thin custom-made caps for your teeth. They are bonded to the front surface or your teeth. Veneers can disguise the appearance of chips in teeth. They are usually made from porcelain or resin. Your dentist will take x-rays and moulds of your teeth to prepare the veneers. Your teeth are then prepared to allow room for the veneers which are then bonded to them.

Many patients make great candidates for veneers. However, it is important to speak to your dentist before deciding on the best course of action for you.

Fixing a Chipped Tooth with Your Dentist

As with any dental procedure, it is important to consult your dentist to consider all options. Everyone’s teeth are different. This may affect which procedure your dentist recommends to fix a chipped tooth. There are many cosmetic and restorative options out there to fix a chipped tooth. It is simply a matter of determining what is right for you.

At Boon Dental we think everyone deserves to be proud of their smile. We are dedicated to helping you achieve a healthy smile that you love. If you are concerned about a chipped or broken tooth, then please give us a call to discuss your treatment options.
