What is the Difference Between Invisalign and Braces?

If you’re looking to straighten your teeth and improve your smile with orthodontic treatments, you’re most likely considering  Invisalign or braces. Both options are effective in correcting misaligned teeth and can help improve a person’s overall oral health. But what’s the difference between the two? In this blog, we’ll discuss the differences between Invisalign and braces, the pros and cons of each option, price differences, and which option may be the right choice for you.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth. Instead of using traditional metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of custom-made trays to move the teeth into the desired position.

A treatment plan is designed for you by taking 3d digital scans and X-rays, and your teeth impressions are sent to the lab to create your clear aligner teeth trays. Once the aligners are ready, they are fitted to your teeth with tooth-coloured buttons to hold them in place. Each set will be changed in stages as the teeth gradually start aligning. In the end, you will be given clear retainers to set the newly straightened teeth in place.

What are Braces?

Braces are a traditional orthodontic treatment that involves the use of metal brackets and wires. The brackets are bonded to the teeth and held in place with a wire. This wire is then adjusted periodically to move the teeth into the desired position.

Traditional braces are applied by a dentist. After the initial consultation, x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth, the dentist will bond metal brackets to the front of the teeth. Archwires are threaded through the brackets and tightened, and elastic bands are used to help move the teeth into the desired position. You will have to visit the dentist periodically to get the braces tightened and adjusted as your teeth begin to align.

What is the Difference Between Invisalign and Braces?

Both Invisalign and braces are proven orthodontic treatments to straighten teeth. But they have some key differences which may affect your decision when choosing either of the options.

Some of the differences between Invisalign and braces are:

Appearance

The most noticeable difference between Invisalign and braces is their appearance. Invisalign is made of a clear plastic material which makes them almost indetectable. Whereas braces are made of metal brackets and wires are visible when worn.

Wearing Time

Invisalign must be worn for 22 hours to get the desired results. They must be taken out when eating or drinking, and the teeth cleaned before you put them back on. Whereas braces are fixed and worn 24 hours a day. Any adjustments or removal must be made by your dentist.

Application

Invisalign aligners are fabricated in the lab after taking your teeth impressions. A series of clear aligner trays are given to you after they are ready. Each set must be worn for 2 weeks and then changed to the next one as your teeth gradually align to the desired position. You can put them on yourself, and there is no lengthy application time for fixing them because they are removable.

Braces take a long longer to apply because they are fixed. Metal brackets are bonded to your teeth with clear glue and anchored with an archwire. You will need regular visits to your dentists as your teeth start moving to get the braces adjusted.

Pros and Cons of Invisalign

Pros

  • Invisalign’s aesthetic appeal is its main advantage. Since they’re almost transparent, most adults prefer them to traditional metal braces
  • Invisalign is removable, which makes them a convenient choice. They can be removed for social functions or while eating
  • Invisalign makes brushing and flossing easy because they can be removed
  • There are no dietary restrictions with Invisalign because food particles may get stuck in metal brackets or wires
  • Invisalign aligners are more comfortable to wear as they are made to fit your teeth
  • You don’t have to visit the dentist as often. There are only quick appointments to check on your progress

Cons

  • Invisalign is more expensive than traditional braces because they are custom-made for your teeth
  • Invisalign may not suit people who are lazy about their oral hygiene as they must be removed every time you eat, and the teeth cleaned before you put them on
  • Some people may not be able to keep them on for 22 hours a day. This might slow their progress and not give them the desired result
  • Invisalign may not be suitable for people with severe orthodontic problems such as an overbite or patients with dental implants or bridges

Pros and Cons of Braces

Pros

  • Braces can resolve almost any orthodontic issue, from misaligned jaw and bite problems to teeth straightening and periodontal problems
  • Since braces are fixed, they are more suitable for younger children because they don’t have to remove them every time they eat and clean their teeth
  • Braces are less expensive than Invisalign

Cons

  • Metal braces are visible on your teeth. This might make some people feel self-conscious about their smile, especially in social settings
  • Brushing your teeth is more difficult with braces. You have to be careful about getting all the food particles, and not cleaning properly can cause plaque to build up around the wires. This can lead to tooth decay and stains
  • Braces are also less comfortable than aligners as they may rub against your gums and cause irritation
  • Hard and sticky foods must be avoided when wearing braces as the wires can break or brackets can get dislodged from the pressure
  • Braces treatment requires more visits to the dentist as they must be adjusted in a clinic

Price difference Between Braces and Invisalign

Generally, braces cost less than Invisalign. But the treatment cost may vary based on the treatment time and the individual’s dental insurance policy. However, the cost of Invisalign can be more depending on the length of the treatment and the number of aligners needed.

Your treatment time and results are typically affected by the skill of your dentist. Since each smile is different, orthodontic treatment requires continuous monitoring and personalised care to guarantee perfect results.

At Boon Dental, we offer bespoke treatment plans for all our patients. This ensures you reach your smile goals with the treatment that best suits your smile needs.

Invisalign Vs Braces: Which Option is Right for You?

Deciding between Invisalign and braces can be a difficult decision. Ultimately, the best option for you will depend on the condition of your teeth, misalignment, budget, and personal preference. Invisialign is a more discreet option and flexible option, while braces may be amore affordable solution. Braces may also be more suitable if the patient is younger or in their early teens.
