Teeth Whitening

Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17-25. We should be a little wiser by the time we reach these ages.

They are the third and last molars that appear as lower and upper teeth at the back of the jaw. Some fortunate people may never have any problems with their wisdom teeth or get them at all! For an unlucky majority, an impacted wisdom tooth can cause many problems. These people will usually need wisdom teeth removal.

Some people choose to delay or completely ignore getting their wisdom teeth examined. However, it’s important to know that dental and general health issues may occur if symptoms are allowed to persist.

Boon Dental’s qualified health practitioners perform wisdom teeth removal routinely

When do I need my wisdom teeth removed?

Tooth Ache

There are a number of reasons you may need your wisdom teeth removed. Occasionally there is not enough space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to come through. As a result, they may become stuck beneath your gum line. This can result in a lot of discomfort. Wisdom teeth that have managed to erupt through the gums can come through at an angle, leading to increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay because they are difficult to clean.

A consultation with one of our expert dentists at Boon Dental will help you know if you need your wisdom teeth taken out. However, if you’re suffering from any of the following symptoms, it could be an indication that your wisdom teeth may need removing:

  • Frequent sore throats
  • Referred pain in your face or neck
  • Redness of your gum around the wisdom tooth area
  • Swelling of your gum around the wisdom tooth area
  • A painful or tender jaw
  • A ‘flap’ in your gum around the wisdom tooth area.
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Toothache in surrounding teeth
  • Bleeding gums around the wisdom tooth area
  • Partially erupted wisdom teeth

What happens if you ignore impacted wisdom teeth?

If you choose to ignore or delay treating impacted wisdom teeth you may be at risk of some serious oral health issues, for example:

  • FGum diseaseErosion and decay of the adjacent healthy teeth Misalignment of teeth due to the wisdom teeth crowding the mouth
  • Infection spreading to other areas of the mouthFood can get trapped behind the wisdom teeth causing decay
  • Painful cysts or fluid-filled sacs can form under the gums
  • Jaw stiffness and trouble talking
  • Damage to your jaw bone

The process of wisdom teeth removal

While the process for wisdom tooth removal can differ from one patient to another, below is generally what you can expect:
Dental X-Ray

Initial consultation

At Boon Dental, one of our experienced dentists will conduct a thorough wisdom teeth consultation. If your wisdom teeth are beneath your gum line, an x-ray will be needed to determine the exact size, location and position of your wisdom teeth. Should your dentist determine your wisdom teeth need removing, your dentist will give you all the information you need. The extraction appointment can be scheduled before you leave your consultation.

Procedure appointment

On the day of your procedure, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area. So, you should not experience any pain during the extraction. For more complicated extractions, you may need to have the procedure done in hospital under a general anesthetic.

Once the area is totally numb (or you’re asleep, in the case of general anaesthetic), your dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue to have access to your wisdom teeth. They then remove the wisdom tooth/teeth, clean the site, and close the incision site. Gauze is then placed over the area to help a blood clot form and kickstart the healing process.

And that’s it! No more pain or discomfort from your wisdom teeth, or worrying about the negative impacts they’re having on your oral health

Wisdom Tooth Removal Aftercare and Check Up

Recovery time depends on the complexity of the procedure. You will likely have some swelling around the area which should reduce in a few days. Medication can be used to manage any pain in the interim, but the discomfort should subside after 3-4 days. If you’re still experiencing pain after a few days, you may need a check-up appointment sooner than your scheduled follow-up.

For a few days after your procedure, you will be on a soft-food-only diet, so you can treat yourself to some ice cream! After a week, the extraction site/s should be healed enough for you to be able to eat normally.
